Peramivir IV for H1N1 Influenza
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) declared a Public Health Emergency on April 26, 2009 due to the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (formerly known as the swine flu). From August 30 – October 17, 2009, 8,204 laboratory-confirmed influenza associated hospitalizations, 411 laboratory-confirmed influenza associated deaths, 21,823 pneumonia and influenza syndrome-based hospitalizations, and 2,416 pneumonia and influenza syndrome-based deaths, were reported to CDC.
On October 24, 2009, President Obama declared the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic a national emergency. Based on this declaration, the Secretary of HHS authorized the release of Peramivir IV under an Emergency Use Authorization. Peramivir is an intravenous neuraminidase inhibitor still in Phase 3 clinical trials. Pharmacists and other health care providers need a basic understanding of the indications, dosing, administration, and potential adverse events of Peramivir as well as procedures for obtaining the drug.
